Experience Sights & Sounds of The Prohibition Era/The Roaring 1920s

at OHA Gambrinus Brew Fest

Annual Event to Benefit OHA Offers Brews, Food and Silent Auction

SYRACUSE, NY–The Prohibition Era/The Roaring 1920s  will come alive when Onondaga Historical Association Museum & Research Center hosts its 11th Annual Gambrinus Brew Fest Fundraiser  Friday, October 13, 2006, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. OHA has selected this colorful decade in U.S. history as the theme for its 2006 Brew Fest to be held at the OHA Museum, 321 Montgomery St., Syracuse, NY.

The event, one of OHAs major annual fundraisers, will offer a lineup of eight Beer Sponsors–who will provide a wide variety of beers and ales for tasting– as well as foods from 12 Food Sponsors, including some of the Syracuse areas most popular restaurants. This years Brew Fest will feature red and white wines for sampling–a first in the annals of the event.

The Soda Ash Six Dixieland Jazz Band will play music from this raucous, compelling era of our countrys past. Those attending the fundraiser will catch a glimpse of a street-driveable 1920s Franklin automobile displayed outside of OHAs front entrance on Montgomery Street.  They will also see the very first Franklin auto sold to Sylvester G. Averell way back in 1902 in OHAs exhibit: Franklin and the Rise of the Automobile Age.  A 1920s police constable will also patrol the museum looking for patrons guilty of having too much fun at the event.

A Silent Auction will enable guests to bid on a number of rare and unique collectibles and memorabilia as well as various products, services and gift certificates donated by local merchants. There will also be a raffle and drawing for special prizes.

Underwriting Sponsors of the event are:  Dry Tech Water Mold Remediation; The Fagliarone Group CPAs; Anaren Microwave, Inc.; Testone, Marshall Discenza CPAs; and Colonial Laundromat.

Serving as Beer Sponsors and providing their beer and ale products to the event are Clarks Ale House; Cooperstown Brewing Company; Landmark Brewing Company; Middle Ages Brewing Company;  Sackets Harbor Brewing Company; Syracuse Suds Factory; The Matt Brewing Company; and T.J. Sheehan Distributing.

Food Sponsors serving food are Ambrosia; Brick Alley Grille House; Carnegie Catering Company; Dinosaur Bar-B-Q; Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub and Restaurant; Liehs & Steigerwald; Nicks Tomato Pie; Pastabilities; P.J. Dorseys; Syracuse Suds Factory; The Mission Restaurant; and Webers Restaurant & Catering.

Lite 105.9  (Citadel Broadcasting Company); CBS 5 WTVH TV; and Eagle Newspapers are OHAs 2006 Brew Fest Media Sponsors.

Tickets are $35 per-person through October 12 and $40 per-person at the door. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the OHA Museum during Museum hours, or, by calling OHA at 315-428-1864, extensions 312 and 321. Tickets are also for sale at Clarks Ale House, Galeville Grocery (Liverpool), Middle Ages Brewing Co., and Syracuse Suds Factory.

All proceeds from the event help fund OHAs Museum and Research Center operations and its in-school, local history education program. Last years Brew Fest generated about $9,500 in net profit to benefit OHA.

Brew Fest guests can browse the permanent and rotating exhibits on two floors of the OHA Museum during the event. These exhibits tell the stories of Syracuse China, The Franklin Automobile, Syracuses Greatest Sports Legends; Citizens from Onondaga County; and the Marsellus Casket Company. Also available for viewing are Freedom Bound, the interactive exhibit that depicts Syracuses role in the Underground Railroad during the period of slavery and abolitionism and an audio-visual production of the momentous Jerry Rescue. Guests can also view mementos and photographs of Syracuses ties to the American Civil War and the Railroad era, as well as the 1775 document known as The General Association in the exhibit History Rediscovered: A Documents Story. This document has been described as the political event which marked the advent of the Revolution in New York State.

While visiting the museum guests will get an up-close look at Gambrinus, the 11-foot, 1500-pound statue of the events namesake that was restored by OHA in 1999 through a generous gift from a descendant of the Haberle family. The Haberle family operated the Haberle Brewing Company on Butternut St. in Syracuse from the late 19th century to 1962.

Onondaga Historical Association is a private, non-profit organization that operates a public Museum and Research Center. The Museum is open to the public Wednesday to Friday, 12 to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Research Center is open Wednesday to Saturday, 1-4 p.m. For more information on the OHA Brew Fest, please visit the OHA website at www.cnyhistory.org.

New and Improved Website Unveiled for

Onondaga Historical Association Museum & Research Center

Syracuse, NYOnondaga Historical Association Museum and Research Center is pleased to unveil the most extensive changes to its website since www.cnyhistory.org was inaugurated about ten years ago. The recent revisions provide more information in a more navigable format than in the past. The website is also more visually rich with the inclusion of more color and photographs. A website visitor counter, blog and online audience survey all indicate that OHAs website is an important resource for its audience.

Information about many topics such as upcoming special events, lectures and exhibits can be found by visiting www.cnyhistory.org. Visitors may also read descriptions and view colorful images of temporary and permanent exhibits and collections. Those interested in OHA membership may learn about members benefits and register online.  Anyone wishing to take advantage of OHAs educational programs may browse current offerings.  Descriptions of research center holdings can be accessed via a link to New York State Archives Historic Document Inventory. A blog allows the public to comment or converse on topics related to the website, OHA events, or Central New York history.

The major revisions to OHAs website were accomplished over several months by experienced and dedicated volunteers Karen Grimm and Pam Priest. This project, like many of OHAs endeavors, can only be accomplished with the help of generous and talented volunteers. Grimm, a LaFayette resident, has varied experience in business and volunteering. She has studied website development, serves as webmaster for several community and school organizations and has operated her own business creating wood puzzles for the past 27 years. Priest, a graduate of Syracuse University, is a resident of the Rochester area but has roots in Onondaga County. She has a personal interest in genealogy and has for the past ten years coordinated Onondaga Countys USGenWeb website. She has served as the webmaster at OHA since February 2006.

We invite you to visit OHAs improved website at cnyhistory.org!
