February 15, 2007 · Leave a Comment

WomenReturn to the mid-1800s as Syracuse abolitionist and women’s rights advocate, Samuel May, hosts three women– an Onondaga Native American, a suffragette and a professional—for a lively interactive “feminist” discussion. Hear about their lives, responsibilities, struggles and hope. The characters presented are based upon the writing of NYS author, Miriam Grace Monfredo, as dramatized by the OHA History Upstagers, a volunteer group of seasoned dramatists. Suitable for small school assemblies, the boardroom or the community room, this program celebrates Women’s History Month and is available by appointment either at the museum or in the community. The presentation lasts 45-60 minutes and costs $250. For more information or to place a reservation, call Scott Peal at 428-1864 x317.

Struggles: The Story of the Underground Railroad in Syracuse

February 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The Onondaga Historical Association Museum offers a special program to schools during Black History Month.  Struggles relives the era of the Underground Railroad in Syracuse by focusing on the Jerry Rescue, the Loguen family, and documents  germane to this historic and consequential period.  Led by well known, mid-19th century Syracuse activist & women’s rights supporter, Samuel May, students will be transported back to a time of great upheaval in Syracuse’s history.  Through film, a sound & light show, and original documents, students will experience the struggles of those for and against slavery in a very dramatic way.  OHA education staff usually offers this program to teachers at $100 per class during the year, but for the month of February only, the program cost is reduced to $75.  The presentation is available by appointment only and lasts two hours.  For more information or to place a reservation call Scott Peal at 428-1864 x 317.

Yates Castle Photos

February 4, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Yates CastleI was trying to pick a subject area out of so many different subjects I’m interested in to scan more photos for OHA’s online Photo Store. Mike Flanagan, OHA Archivist, suggested I scan the Yates Castle photos from OHA’s research center vertical files. Which is exactly what I did. Wow, what a great assortment of photos! You’ll want to check them out here. If you find you’re in love with one or more of the photos in the OHA Photo Store, you can order reprints for your home!

As I was planning to write about the interesting and diverse history of Yates Castle I remembered that the latest Syracuse University Magazine ran an article on it. You’ll want to click on the link and read about it! And now I can move on to the next subject area. I have another one in mind for this week. But if you have a subject area whose photos you would like to see in OHA’s Photo Store, please leave a comment here! Stay tuned to see what’s next!
